When in Rome
I lived in Sicily about 15 years ago and visited Rome often, but didn't quite experience the food and sights like I did in our most recent trip. Chris and I decided to stop in Rome for 3 days on the way back from Greece. While we would have loved to enjoy a couple more days here, 2 full days ended up being just enough time to eat (A LOT), see, and feel the beauty of Rome. ENJOY!
Where to Stay
We found a cute and very affordable Airbnb very close to the Trevi Fountain (about 5 minute walk) and we found this neighborhood to be lively and conveniently located to so many sights/restaurants. We hardly took the subway or an Uber - we walked a lot. An added bonus - we visited the Trevi often as it was on the way to and from the Airbnb. Perf.
What to Do/See
There is so much beauty in Rome. I personally enjoyed strolling through random neighborhoods in between meals, people watching at cafes or at the Trevi, and drinking wine outdoors at any restaurant that offered it the most, BUT we definitely made time for these beauties:
SPANISH STEPS
VATICAN/SISTINE CHAPEL - spent lots of time here. Even though I've been here several times before, it is just as - or even more - jaw dropping beautiful as the last time. Buy tickets ahead of time.
TREVI FOUNTAIN - with your back towards the Trevi, toss a coin in and make a wish. Go very early and/or late to enjoy the Trevi in peace because prime time = nothing but selfie sticks and IG models and husbands shoving you out of the way.
COLOSSEUM - Just wow. Buy tickets ahead of time.
What to Eat
1. OSTERIA BARBERINI - TRUFFLE HEAVEN. I would highly recommend making reservations here ahead of time by emailing info@degustibusroma.com. We couldn't get a hold of them the day of so we got there right when it opened, begged the owner and told him it was our honeymoon - so he gave us a table with an hour time limit, lol. DON'T CHANCE IT LIKE WE DID, make a reservation! I highly recommend ordering one white truffle entree and another black truffle one. We ordered the white truffle pasta and the black truffle lasagna. YUM. Oh and Barolo vino always.
2. LA PROSCIUTERRIA CANTINA DEI PAPI - We really enjoyed day drinking while sharing a charcuterie board and sandwich here! Very affordable wine bottles and food. We left it to the very cool servers to pick the meat, cheese, and sandwich for us and they did an awesome job.
3. PIZZERIA BOCCI - pick a number (like you would at the deli) and they call you up to order. You can ask them to make the pizza squares as small or large as you'd like. We ordered a variety of small squares so we could try (almost) everything. We also enjoyed the supplis (fried rice balls with marinara). Near Sistine Chapel/Vatican.
4. RISTORANTE LA TAVERNETTA 48 - Lobster ravioli and black truffle pasta. Delicious and affordable. Make reservations through Trip Advisor and get 20% off your meal. WOW.
5. ROMA SPARITA - recommended by my food hero Anthony Bourdain, we headed over to try their infamous cacio e pepe served in a parmesan bowl. WOW. FYI it is a bit of a trek from central Rome, but worth it.
6. GIOLITTI - You can't come to Italia and not have gelato. We thought Giolitti had the best!
7. CANNOLI SICILIANI - you have to have cannolis in Italia. We got one with every cappuccino and we loved them all, but we especially loved the cannolis here.
